We Give Water was formed as part of a FIRST LEGO League Project in 2017. FIRST LEGO League is a global robotics competition that encourages students age 9-16 to research and problem solve a real world issue, design, build and code a LEGO robot all while adhering to Core Values that embrace teamwork and friendly competition. Our home based team, sponsored by a local company, SABIC, was challenged to find a solution to a problem related to "Hydrodynamics." At the time, several of our team members were reading the book, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. This book opened our eyes to the water situation in Africa and inspired We Give Water.
Our team competed at RPI in December, 2017 and placed first advancing us to the Semi-Final competition at NYSUT in February, 2018. From that competition we were chosen to participate in the Championship Tournament at Duchess County Community College where we received the Robot Design Award.
After establishing We Give Water as an official not for profit we began fundraising. We approached family, friends and local businesses for donations. We've raised money through craft fairs, raffles and bake sales. We organized golf tournaments and even collected cans.
With three of our founding members heading off to college, the rest of the team is still working to raise more money and install more taps.
